Today the students began working on skip counting. We have been looking at a hundred chart and are looking for patterns when we count by 2's, 5's and 10's. A fun website is http://www.primarygames.co.uk/pg2/splat/splatsq100.html
Today we worked on finishing our Glenbow Ranch writing. Students were encouraged to record all of their observations, activities, and questions through writing and a picture.
We have begun exploring the question, "Who uses the coulee and why?" With your family, discuss why you have gone into the coulee. What did you do there? Where/how do you play outside?

Reminder:
Tomorrow is a PD day - No School
Today the Kindness Pod did a Glenbow Ranch reflection. We reviewed the GUM strategy with students where they stretch a word out like gum to listen to all of the sounds in each word. We asked them to include as many ideas as possible, think about what forms of punctuation they should use (grade 2's mostly), and to use proper spacing between words.
In math, the students used their knowledge of the number line to fill in missing numbers, some challenged themselves to go up to 100 and then were challenged to create their own number lines with skip counting.
Please return Fundscrip orders!

Glenbow Ranch
Glenbow Ranch Reflection - October 24
I saw Caleb.
I met new friends.
We saw a train going toward the mountains.
We journaled about things that we saw.
We went to the old post office and general store.
We got to go into the tipi.
We saw the broken down house.
We saw sage and it smelled good.
My group saw a broken down car and there were pieces everywhere!
There were fossils in a rock.
In my group we saw a compass and we used it.
Our group saw bird nests.
Today our group saw a dead snake.
Today our groups saw holes for gophers or snakes or something.
The snake we saw was a garder snake.
There was a sign in the visitor centre that said, land for sale for 6 cents/acre.
We saw animal skulls. Maybe it was a deer.
We found a geocache.
Our group saw white fur. We thought it was a bunny.
Our group did 360 degree journaling.
We saw a big hole in the tree. We thought maybe a tiny owl was in there.
I saw a tree that was looped on the top.
We saw animal scat.
We saw black and brown cows.
The post office was last used in 1920. That is 98 years ago.

Tomorrow is our Glenbow Ranch trip! The high for tomorrow is 15 degrees but it will be cold in the morning so dress in layers. Since the paths are dry please wear comfortable walking shoes. Please also ensure each child has an extra snack, their lunch and a full water bottle. If you have not submitted your form, please hand them in by tomorrow or your child will need to stay at school with another class.
We have started Gymnastics during our P.E. Today we started by learning how to safely land and fall.
We are continuing our work with number lines and skip counting. Some groups played a game where they rolled a die and hopped that many spaces forward on their number line.

* Please note that because Kindness Pod will be at Glenbow Ranch on Wednesday we will sadly miss the Book Truck. Mrs. Le has offered to take any books back to the Calgary Public Library. Please have your books brought back by Thursday.
Please make sure that all Glenbow Ranch forms are returned.
Today we started discussing Zones of Regulation, this is a way to identify our emotions and use a common language with the students across the school. You may want to look up the zones of regulation and what each colour zone means. You can use this language at home too!
We are continuing to identify numbers up to 100 and place them in sequence on a number line.
Please send Home Reading books back in your child's communication folder when you are finished reading through them a couple of times.
If you find that your child is not bringing home a book and you have asked them to exchange it, please let a teacher know and we will provide further support in building independence in the home reading program.
Today we started an art project where students identified a symbol of something that is important to them, they then used two primary colours to mix together and added white to explore different shades and to create secondary colours.

Way to go, Kindness Pod! Last night's Sound Kreations Performance was a huge success.
*Picture Retakes are Nov. 5th*
We are still looking for volunteers for our upcoming trip to Glenbow Ranch.
During Ignite, students are being trained to use apps that help them design, build, construct, or discover. They will soon be on an iPad schedule where they will get to use the iPad's during Ignite with robots, coding, math or language apps that challenge their thinking.
Today we had a wonderful presentation by Sarah Parker, from Glenbow Ranch to teach us about the history of Glenbow Ranch, dating back to 1000s of years ago, to the time of Eric Harvie and the present.
We also learned how to care for and respect the land and the plants and animals on the ranch.
Ours students are writing from their "Brain Pockets". Please ask them about what they have put into their Memory, Fact and Imagination pockets.
We have begun working with number lines and skip counting. See if you can make a long number line at home and just practice placing numbers on the line and spacing them out. Grade 1's are only expected go to 20 right now.

Today we sent a notice home about our Home Reading program. Please note that not all students have received a book yet, this will happen at some point this week for all students in the Kindness Pod. Please read over the letter that was sent home today with your child and discuss how you will get into a routine of reading each day. Please send home reading books back in your child's communication folder.

We are starting to practice selecting books for Home Reading but are keeping the books at school until we are ready to send them home with the students. Once we have taught the students how to select an IPICK book from the cart, we will send a letter home explaining our intentions behind daily home reading.
BOOK ORDERS ARE DUE for Whispering Willows and Snowy Owl and due Monday for Wild Rose and Mountain View.
We are doing seed math! We have students working collaboratively to talk about different and efficient ways to count seeds. Some groups organized their seeds in rows, counted by 1's, 5's and even 10's.
We had two practices today for our Peace Assembly.
We are hoping all of our Kindness Pod families can join us for our Peace Assembly on Friday at 11:00.
Today was day two of our Sound Kreations dance residency. This seven class residency (October 9,10,11,15,16,17,18) will culminate with an evening performance and learning walk on October 18. The performance times are: Kindergarten, 5:30; Kindness Pod, 6:00; Joy Pod, 6:30; Peace Pod, 7:00; and Hope Pod 7:30.
Pods will also have other examples of evidence of learning for Physical Literacy during the evening.
Keep checking the blogs for more information.
Beat Street (K-12)
We’ve combined Hip‐Hop, Stomp and Dub‐Step (Animation) dance styles to create an Urban dance experience that will have your whole school buzzing.
We explore the groove of Hip‐Hop, the sounds of Stomp and the electronic influences of Dub‐ Step!
Students will learn to balance the flow of robotic dance moves with the powerful precision of steppin’, while also building upon foundational hip-hop styles.
We’ll look at the influences London, LA and West Africa have had on these modern dance styles and learn to integrate the original steps of dance with the new expressions we’ve all come to love!
This voyage of kinesthetic expression is highly interactive, entirely approachable, and fun, fun, FUN!

Today's Bloogers:
Anika E., Wyatt, Natasha, Luke
We went outside for a body break. I played at the park.
For our Peace Assembly, my group made hats and costumes. I made a deer. I made a bunny. I'm a seed! I made a costume for the play.
Other groups practiced being MC's, worked on the movie, worked on our background, and making hats.
Yesterday, we counted with sunflower seeds. First we had to estimate. I estimated 152 seeds. I estimated 212. I estimated 170 and I estimated 107.
It took me a couple tries. I first tried counting by piles of 5's and then I tried to put them in rows of 10.
I counted one by one and made a big pile.
I got one big pile and then I slid them to another big pile to count.
Reminders:
The Kindness Pod's Peace Assembly is on October 12th at 11:00AM. We hope to see you there!
Please return field trip expense form and photo orders. You can also order photos and book orders online!
No School on Monday. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
