October 15, 2018

Today we sent a notice home about our Home Reading program.  Please note that not all students have received a book yet, this will happen at some point this week for all students in the Kindness Pod.  Please read over the letter that was sent home today with your child and discuss how you will get into a routine of reading each day.  Please send home reading books back in your child's communication folder.

Glenbow Ranch trip is coming up and we are looking for volunteers to join us!  Each volunteer will be partnered with a teacher to lead a group through activities.

We are starting to practice selecting books for Home Reading but are keeping the books at school until we are ready to send them home with the students.  Once we have taught the students how to select an IPICK book from the cart, we will send a letter home explaining our intentions behind daily home reading.

BOOK ORDERS ARE DUE for Whispering Willows and Snowy Owl and due Monday for Wild Rose and Mountain View.

We are doing seed math!  We have students working collaboratively to talk about different and efficient ways to count seeds.  Some groups organized their seeds in rows, counted by 1's, 5's and even 10's.

We had two practices today for our Peace Assembly.

We are hoping all of our Kindness Pod families can join us for our Peace Assembly on Friday at 11:00.

Today was day two of our Sound Kreations dance residency.  This seven class residency (October 9,10,11,15,16,17,18) will culminate with an evening performance and learning walk on October 18.  The performance times are: Kindergarten, 5:30; Kindness Pod, 6:00; Joy Pod, 6:30; Peace Pod, 7:00; and Hope Pod 7:30.
Pods will also have other examples of evidence of learning for Physical Literacy during the evening.
Keep checking the blogs for more information.
Beat Street (K-12)
We’ve combined HipHop, Stomp and DubStep (Animation) dance styles to create an Urban dance experience that will have your whole school buzzing.
We explore the groove of HipHop, the sounds of Stomp and the electronic influences of Dub Step!
Students will learn to balance the flow of robotic dance moves with the powerful precision of steppin’, while also building upon foundational hip-hop styles.
We’ll look at the influences London, LA and West Africa have had on these modern dance styles and learn to integrate the original steps of dance with the new expressions we’ve all come to love!
This voyage of kinesthetic expression is highly interactive, entirely approachable, and fun, fun, FUN!

Please do so by tomorrow, Wednesday, October 10.
We will have a final total by Friday, October 12 and the draw will be made for the Terry Fox T-Shirt from all pledge forms returned.

October 5, 2018

Today's Bloogers:
Anika E., Wyatt, Natasha, Luke

We went outside for a body break.  I played at the park.
For our Peace Assembly, my group made hats and costumes.  I made a deer.  I made a bunny.  I'm a seed!  I made a costume for the play.

Other groups practiced being MC's, worked on the movie, worked on our background, and making hats.

Yesterday, we counted with sunflower seeds.  First we had to estimate.  I estimated 152 seeds.  I estimated 212.  I estimated 170 and I estimated 107.

It took me a couple tries.  I first tried counting by piles of 5's and then I tried to put them in rows of 10.

I counted one by one and made a big pile.

I got one big pile and then I slid them to another big pile to count.

Reminders:
The Kindness Pod's Peace Assembly is on October 12th at 11:00AM.  We hope to see you there!
Please return field trip expense form and photo orders.  You can also order photos and book orders online!
No School on Monday.  Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2018

Today we got back into our Peace Assembly groups to continue our work toward the Kindness Pod's assembly for October 12th.  We hope you can join us that day at 11:00AM.

We are continuing to work on building stamina in our Read to Self, and Work on Writing.

We all journaled about the arrowheads that were found in Tuscany.  They date back to 8000 years ago.  You can see them on display at the Tuscany Club.  The students asked many thoughtful questions such as, what are they made of, how were they made, and what animals did they hunt with them?

In math, we are using a variety of ways to show our understanding of number.  Some students use pictures to solve problems (ie. drawing the number of leaves on each branch and then counting the total number of leaves on the tree) and some students are using equations (ie. Branch 1 + Branch 2 + Branch 3 + Branch 4).

Our Field Trip Expense form went home today.
Book orders for Whispering Willow and Snowy Owl went home yesterday, please return them by next Wednesday.  Book orders for Wild Rose and Mountain View will go home tomorrow.

Monday, October 1

Today's Bloggers: Quinn, Olivia, Blaise, Cliff, Ellie

We made some art for our assembly.  I made the water, the bushes, and the sun.
We went to the Orange Shirt Assembly.  We learned about the residential school and some kids had to stay there for 300 days.  It made me sad.  It makes me happy that it doesn't happen any more.
In Math we had to use 15 blocks and we tried to see how to get to 21.  I figured it out.  It is 6!
We did Read to Self.  We were nice and quiet and in our own space.
My group was trying to practice for the MC to see if we can read with a loud and clear voice.  I felt like I did good.
We talked about the coulee.  We did our jobs and I got to pick the animal I would like to be in the play.  I picked a garder snake.
After snack, we played "Give The Dog a Bone" in the classroom.
