Spring Fundraiser

Spring Fundraiser2019

This spring we are selling beautiful, locally grown flowers, and plants to help raise money for our programs. Fundraising is always a vital part of ensuring the students have the best year possible. The money raised is used to help cover costs for programs, equipment, resources, and extra-curricular activities. It also takes some of the financial burden off the parents – allowing more kids to participate in activities, such as Artistsin Residence (WP Puppeteers) and school special events (including our Film Festival in June).
Important Notes:
  • Please ensure customers makes cheques payable to : Eric Harvie School
  • Our team website (to place online orders and view plants in color) is located at:https://ericharvie.growingsmilesfundraising.com/home
  • Please try to sell only to your family, friends and close neighbours. (Parents may take order forms to work to collect sales if desired).
  • We do not encourage young students soliciting door-to-door sales for safety reasons.
  • Plants are supplied by DeVry Greenhouses
By purchasing a beautiful plant(s) this spring, not only will you be spreading summer cheer, you will also be supporting an amazing cause! Notices will sent home today Thursday, April 18/19 or April 23/19 and must be returned no later thanMonday, May 13/19. All plants ordered will be available for pick up at Eric Harvie School on May 30 and 31/19 at the office between 1:00 – 4:00 pm.
We hope that you will see something you like and help support our cause. We couldn't do it without you!

The students have been working hard to prepare for their upcoming puppet residency which begins this Thursday.  We have read many Blackfoot Napi stories and students are deciding which story they would like to retell with their puppets.  Ask your child to tell you some of the stories and what the lessons are that we learn from the stories.

Our math groups which have been focusing on adding and subtracting strategies will continue to the end of the week and will then wrap up.

The Vivo group has been spending some time on the bouldering wall and talking about why physical health is important to our bones, joints and muscles.  They are also learning about why water is important to all body functions.  They watched a video that taught them that babies have more bones than adults and that the human body has over 200 bones!

Hats off for Mental Health

EHS "Hats On for Mental Health Day"

Tomorrow is 'Hats Off for Mental Health Day' so all children & staff are invited to wear hats during the school day - there will be notes in blogs reminding parents as well. Eric Harvie School fully supports many forms of mental health awareness!
Here is the official message from Alberta Education/CBE:

On Wednesday, May 1, 2019, Albertans are invited to take part in Hats On! For Mental Health and wear a hat to raise awareness of the importance of positive mental health. Schools can participate by encouraging students and staff to wear hats and engaging in conversations focused on understanding mental health and the importance of removing the stigma associated with mental illness.

You can learn more about Hats On! For Mental Health by visiting canwetalk.ca, a website sponsored by the Alberta Teachers’ Association and the Canadian Mental Health Association that includes a variety of mental health resources for schools.

The focus on mental health promotion continues during Mental Health Week, which is being held this year from May 6 to 10. Students who are mentally healthy are resilient and better able to learn, achieve success and build healthy relationships.

You can learn more about supporting positive mental health in schools by visiting the Alberta government website at www.alberta.ca/mental-health-in-schools.aspx.

April 26

Happy Friday!

Today we started with literacy in our Open Mind groups. We all read different Napi stories. We are preparing for our Puppet residency that begins next week. We will be retelling different Napi stories using puppets that we will create with our Artist in Residence.

After a short snack and recess break we were very fortunate to have a visit from a Canadian author, Sheree Fitch. She read us some of her poems and answered questions for us.

We ended our week as a whole pod to vote on the WACK missions in the school.

As always, have a great weekend and come back on Monday. Also, please check the weather before coming to school each day and dress accordingly. If the opportunity presents itself, we will try to get to the coulee or out for community walks.

April 24, 2019

Today the Vivo group worked on finishing their 3D sculptures and started moving into writing about them using mathematical language (corners, edges, faces, verticies.  They will be getting ready for building while using the gym with a play specialist during their Vivo week in May.

The Zoo group reflected on their walk to the coulee yesterday and added to their Twelve Mile Coulee Flora and Fauna list.  We are writing about ways we think we can work to protect the coulee from human impact.

The Kindness Pod has begun our last rotation of our addition and subtraction strategies.  The students are working to build their basic fact skills to help with efficiency, and number flexibility.

Our literacy groups are all starting to explore oral storytelling using Blackfoot Napi stories.  The students are going to be listening to a number of stories and will select their favorite story which they would like to retell in a small group.  They will then create puppets using a variety of materials with a puppet expert.

Spring Picture Day is Tomorrow!
Don't forget to order your spring plants to help raise money for exciting activities this year!

April 23, 2019

Today started off with some exciting things happening during Ignite.  Many of the plants we planted last week are already getting quite tall, especially the beans.  If you happen to have any seed packages at home that you wouldn't mind donating we would love to use them.

The Vivo group is working in partners using the "Clips" app to help prepare for their film they will create.  In math, they are working on finishing up their 3D sculptures and moving on to their writing rubric.

The Low/Shephard Museum group continued to work on their flags today and their tipis.

The Zoo Crew had quite an amazing adventure this afternoon when they came across a mother moose and her calf in the coulee.  The students were silent and sat down to sketch them without even being asked to.  We watched them for about 10 minutes before we started to head back to sketch the crocuses.

We all did Daily 5 today and most kids wrote about what they did during their Easter Long weekend.

Mrs. Le's group had another great day at the museum. We spent time in the Ranching gallery this morning where we were tasked with trying to find out what mystery artifacts were on display for us. We had a lot of fun coming up with wonders and questions. The afternoon students were in groups to explore galleries that they wanted to revisit.

 Back at school...

Mrs. Le's Glenbow Group

I wanted to take a few moments to update on how our week is going at the Glenbow Museum. We have learned a lot in just two days - how to assemble a tipi, what different pieces of armour were for, and even about fashion in Paris after WW2. The students have been busy asking questions, sharing wonderings, and sketching about their learning. I am so proud of how diligent and dedicated they are! We have a little break every day after lunch where we try to get outside and burn off some energy or see other Calgary places (Olympic Plaza, Central Library, City Hall).  I have been taking a ton of photos and look forward to sharing them with the students after our Open Minds week is finished.
